The taxonomy of the genus Campylorhamphus Bertoni, 1901 is still uncertain, with many inconsistent evolutionary patterns implied by current taxonomy. A re-analysis of the type-series of Campylorhamphus procurvoides successor Todd, 1948 revealed that the holotype is indistinguishable from Campylorhamphus trochilirostris notabilis Zimmer, 1934, while the paratypes belonged either to the latter taxon or to a second already named taxon (Campylorhamphus trochilirostris snethlageae Zimmer, 1934), and a third and yet undescribed taxon allied to Campylorhamphus procurvoides. Ecological correlates of serological status for Bayou virus in Oryzomys palustris (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) Mastozool. neotrop.

Home range size and habitat use of seropositive Oryzomys palustris, primary host for the Bayou strain of hantavirus, were compared to that of seronegative individuals from March 2002 - August 2003 in a longitudinal field population study. There were significant macrohabitat associations with serological status, but selection for most microhabitat variables did not differ between seropositive and seronegative animals. Seropositive adult males moved farther (had larger home ranges) than did seronegatives and were larger in terms of mass and testes size. These patterns may reflect the influence of infection on rodent ecology in terms of dominance and access to preferred habitats.

Three species of Columbidae (Columbina talpacoti,Columbina picui and Zenaida auriculata) were studied in Londrina, Northern Paraná (Brazil), with the aim of analyzing which foraging and habitat factors contribute to their ecological partitioning. The study was conducted over one year in three different areas (urban, rural and pasture). We made monthly observations of the foraging strategies used by the species and the habitats they selected. This study investigated the importance of variations in environmental factors affecting the abundance patterns of decapods on the southeastern Brazilian coast. Sampling was carried out monthly from January 1998 through December 1999 in Ubatumirim and Mar Virado, Ubatuba region, using a commercial shrimp fishing boat equipped with double-rig nets. Shellfish culture can lead to an accumulation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) over the surface of intertidal mudflats. EPS are rheologically active polymers that change water viscosity and water flow over the branchial basket of the juvenile flatfish that colonise intertidal mudflats. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of water EPS content on various aspects of the physiology and behaviour of the common sole Solea solea. Field studies revealed that water total EPS can be up to 15 mg l 1 in the field. In sole juveniles (aged class 0+) ventilatory distress was observed at concentrations above 4 mg l-1, and the intensity of the constraint decreased with fish size. The use of artificial structures as a shelter for fishes was evaluated aiming to assess increase in fish abundance in Ilha Grande Bay at Southeast Brazilian coast (Lat: 22°8'-23°5' S; Long. 44º05’-44º40’W). Five different types of structures, made of clay tiles, with an increase range on size and complexity were tested to assess their efficiency. Fish were counted in each type of structure from May-1996 to April-1997 by underwater observation made with snorkelling. I conducted a small mammal trapping study in the central Paraguayan Chaco region of South America to investigate habitat selection by small mammals at different spatial scales. Small mammals were collected in forest, successional thorn scrub, pasture, and crop fields representing both relatively undisturbed habitats and agroecosystems. A total of 1089 small mammals representing 13 species were captured during 23 296 trap nights. Pastures had the highest species richness as well as the highest number of captures. Some small mammal species such as Calomys laucha and Akodon toba were captured in a variety of habitats whereas others like Holochilus chacarius and Bolomys lasiurus were captured almost exclusively in pastures. The diet composition and feeding habits of Zapteryx brevirostris were studied through stomach contents analysis. 158 specimens were collected from 7 research cruises carried out by Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP, Argentina)between 2001 to 2004, in the Buenos Aires Province (Argentina) and Uruguay coasts (34°-41° S), until 50 m depth. Of the total stomach analysis, 81percentage contained food. Man‐made infrastructures have become ubiquitous components of coastal landscapes, leading to habitat modification that affects the abundance and diversity of marine organisms. Marine coastal fish have a complex life cycle requiring different essential habitats. One of these habitats is known as a nursery, a place where juveniles can settle in large numbers, survive, and grow to contribute to the adult population. Nurseries are mainly found in shallow, sheltered zones and are thus particularly impacted by urbanization, notably by harbors. This study examines the effects of varying dietary lipids on growth, survival, lipid composition and behaviour in lobster Homarus americanus (Milne Edwards, 1837) postlarvae. Lobsters were fed one of 3 diets during their early ontogeny: (1) Artemac, a widely used Artemia replacement; (2) a ternary mixture consisting of Artemac, frozen Artemia adults and Artemia flakes; or (3) a mixture of live A. salina nauplii and adults. The endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) survives in an area of pronounced habitat diversity in southern Florida, occupying extensive home ranges that encompass a mosaic of habitats. Twenty-one years of daytime monitoring via radiotelemetry have provided substantial but incomplete information about panther ecology, mainly because this method fails to capture movement and habitat use between dusk and dawn, when panthers are most active. Periwinkle (Gastropoda: Littorinidae) habitat selection and its impact upon microalgal populations BJB

The present study examines habitat selection and grazing pressure of the periwinkle Nodilittorina lineolata (Gmelin, 1791) on the rocky shore of Arraial do Cabo, RJ, Brazil (lat. 23°S, long. 43°W). Transfer experiments suggest that periwinkles actively select the mid intertidal, where the cirripede Chthamalus bisinuatus Pilsbry is the dominant sessile invertebrate. We also conducted a caging experiment in the middle intertidal, manipulating grazers and light, to assess the impact of grazing upon microalgal density. Grazing pressure significantly reduced microalgal abundance at the mid-intertidal level, suggesting that food availability plays an important role in the habitat selection of periwinkles on the studied shore.

Toward a Panther-centered View of the Forests of South Florida Ecology and Society

Anthropogenic habitat degradation and loss is the single largest threat to the endangered Florida panther, Puma concolor coryi. Conservation of the subspecies must be undertaken on the scale of the entire landscape. Thus, a view of the forested landscape of South Florida must be developed that is meaningful with reference to the panther. We approach this problem by analyzing the spatial interactions of panthers and forests at multiple scales. We apply tools derived from fractal geometry to the analysis of 12 years of telemetry observations of panthers and remotely sensed forest cover imagery.
